In 1874 he became a student at the Colored Business College in Richmond, Virginia, later moved to Lynchburg, Virginia where he spent two years learning bookkeeping and accounting skills. In 1880 he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana where he worked as a bank clerk for six years. He then went to Washington, D.C., where he worked for seven years as a clerk in the Treasury Department.

T. S. Edwards moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1888 and from there went to Kansas City, Missouri where he worked for three years as an auditor with the railroad yard office.

In 1897 T. S., along with his wife and two sons moved back to New Orleans and then on to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where they lived for eleven years before settling in Shreveport, Louisiana.
